Wander up the road from Petersham station – and into the heart of Sydney’s Little Portugal – and you will find some of the best pastel de natas in town.
Sweet Belem has fast become famous for its Portuguese tarts, selling between 600 to 1,000 of the custard-filled delights on a weekend day. Come hungry, as there are many other delicious pastries to choose from, such as bola de Berlim (doughnuts made with a traditional egg custard), Portuguese brioche croissants and Portuguese Napkins (a square of sponge cake folded in half with custard inside).
The family-owned bakery also has a great range of gluten-free desserts, catering packages with bite-sized versions of their classics, celebratory cakes and fresh bread.
